JORGE ANDRADE E O DRAMA MODERNO NO BRASIL

RESUMO: O presente artigo defende o ponto de vista que situa A moratória, de Jorge Andrade, em lugar
de Vestido de Noiva, de Nelson Rodrigues, como a peça inauguradora de uma tradição sistemática de
teatro e drama modernos brasileiros. Para tanto, além de destacar alguns elementos do desenvolvimento
de uma estrutura teatral moderna no Brasil, serão explicitados os pressupostos teóricos do drama moderno
– compreendendo teatro moderno brasileiro como a junção de estrutura teatral e de drama nacional
modernos. Propõe-se uma análise dos principais elementos formais e temáticos de A Moratória, posto que é a combinação desses que torna esta peça efetivamente moderna.

ABSTRACT: The present article defends the view that it was 'A moratória' by Jorge Andrade (instead of
'Vestido de noiva' by Nelson Rodrigues, as some may argue) the play that inaugurated a Brazilian
systematic tradition of modern Theater and drama. In order to do so, besides some historical elements of
the development of modern theatrical structure in Brazil, the main theoretical framework of modern
drama will be established – understanding that modern Theatre as a blend of modern theatrical structures
and modern national drama. Then an analysis of the main formal elements and themes of 'A Moratoria'
will be proposed, as we believe that it is the combination of all these features that make the play
effectively modern.
