PELOS CANTOS DA CIDADE: MÚSICA POPULAR EM SÃO
PAULO NA PASSAGEM DO SÉCULO XIX AO XX

RESUMO: O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar algumas canções que percorriam a cidade de São Paulo
no final do século XIX e início do XX. Em um ambiente oralizado, a canção torna-se o principal veículo
de transmissão cultural, principalmente nas camadas mais baixas da população. Assim, são cantadas as
condições de vida, as saudades, as mercadorias, as notícias, enfim o cotidiano da cidade.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this article is to present some songs that permeated the city of São Paulo
in the end of the century XIX and beginning of the XX. In an oral atmosphere, the song becomes the
principal vehicle of cultural transmission, mainly in the layers more drops of the population. Like this,
they are sung the life conditions, the longings, the goods, the news, in another words, the daily of the city.
