BRASIL DO SÉCULO XIX: CONSIDERAÇÕES ACERCA
DO ÁLBUM BRASIL PITORESCO DE CHARLES
RIBEYROLLES E VICTOR FROND

RESUMO: Propomo-nos neste artigo oferecer subsídios para o estudo das relações entre pintura e
fotografia no Brasil, na segunda metade do século XIX. Introduzida no país nesse período, a fotografia
causou um impacto cultural. Retomando os códigos de representação da pintura, e apoiada na exatidão
das formas e na fidelidade do registro, a fotografia instituiu um novo olhar sobre a natureza. O surgimento
das técnicas inéditas de reprodução mecânica da imagem, como a litografia e a fotografia, abriu caminho
ainda para a produção de vários álbuns de artistas viajantes que divulgaram a paisagem e os costumes
brasileiros. Em nossa pesquisa partimos da análise do livro Brasil Pitoresco de Charles Ribeyrolles e
Victor Frond, publicado em 1861, procurando compreender sua importância em relação às artes visuais
no período.

ABSTRACT: We intend with this article to offer data for the study of the relations between photography
and painting in Brazil, in the second half of the 19th century. Photography was introduced in Brazil in
that period, when it provoked a cultural impact. By recovering painting representation codes and backed
up by the exactitude of the forms and the fidelity of the registry, photography instituted a new regard over
nature. The emergence of unedited techniques of mechanical image reproduction, like lithography and
photography, opened up the path for the production of various albums by traveling artists that publicized
Brazilian landscape and uses. In our research we begun with the analysis of the book Brasil Pitoresco by
Charles Ribeyrolles and Victor Frond, published in 1861, trying to understand its importance regarding
the visual arts of the period.
