EM
DOIS MOMENTOS DO NATURALISMO
BRASILEIRO

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar as obras A carne, de Júlio Ribeiro, e Submundo da
sociedade, de Adelaide Carraro, representativas de dois momentos do Naturalismo brasileiro (e, ambas,
censuradas quando de seu lançamento, sob a acusação de pornografia) do prisma das caracterizações da
mulher e do negro por elas apresentadas. Nosso objetivo é examinar se as obras em tela serviriam para
corroborar o ponto de vista segundo o qual o Naturalismo, em suas diversas fases, seria
fundamentalmente conservador, diluidor de conflitos que marcam a sociedade brasileira, ou se,
diferentemente – esta é nossa hipótese – as obras de Ribeiro e Carraro seriam exemplo sobretudo de uma
postura contraditória, hesitante em relação a questões como o lugar da mulher e do negro na sociedade – e
neste sentido refletiriam contradições e hesitações que, ontem como hoje, marcam o enfrentamento dessas
questões no Brasil.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to analyse two authors – Júlio Ribeiro and his work: A carne and
Adelaide Carraro and her work: Submundo da sociedade, two novels that epitomize distinct periods of
Brazilian Naturalism (both works censured under the accusation of pornography) representing the prism
of the characterizations of the woman and the black person by them presented. We focus on the images of
feminine and black characters presented by those novels discussing whether they corroborate the
assumption that Naturalism is essentially conservative, that it softens the conflicts which pervade the
Brazilian society or – as we believe (this is our hypothesis) – the works of Ribeiro and Carraro represent a
contradictory posture regarding questions as the role of women and blacks in the society – reflecting,
therefore, contradictions and hesitations which are characteristic, until today, of the way Brazilian society
address those themes.
