RESUMO: Discussão das concepções da morte e dos mortos no Ocidente Cristão no Século XIX, buscando compreender o papel das irmandades religiosas na realização dos ritos fúnebres e a importância do pertencimento a estas associações em São Luís do Maranhão.

ABSTRACT: Argue the conceptions of dearth and dead people in the Christian West in the XIX century, we aim to comprehend/understand the hole of the Religious fraternities in the achievement of the funeral rites and the importance of where they take place in one of these associations in São Luís (Maranhão/Brazil).
