PROBLEMAS DE HISTÓRIA DA CIÊNCIA NA ÉPOCA
COLONIAL: A CASA GRANDE DE GILBERTO FREYRE

RESUMO: Um dos maiores problemas com o qual se depara o estudioso da atividade científica no Brasil de épocas passadas é a identificação de sua cultura urbana. Ao valorizar o mundo rural de outros tempos, a obra de Gilberto Freyre sobre a formação brasileira colaborou para fixar a idéia de que o tempo colonial foi aquele em que a Casa Grande definiu os traços mais marcantes de nossa cultura. Com isso, desvalorizamos os trabalhos intelectuais do Brasil dos seus três primeiros séculos de existência, e com eles, a ciência que se produziu por aqui.

ABSTRACT: One of the greatest problems in which the researcher of the scientific activity in Brazil of the past has is the identification of the urban culture. Upon valuing the rural world of others times, the work of Gilberto Freyre about the Brazilian formation collaborated to set the idea that the colonial time was that one in which A Casa Grande (The Big Home) has defined the most outstanding lines of our culture. Because of that, we didn´t value the intellectual works of Brazil of its three first centuries of existence, and with them, the science that was produced around here.
