ESTADOS-NACIONAIS E EXÉRCITOS NA EUROPA MODERNA:
UM OLHAR SOBRE O CASO PORTUGUÊS

RESUMO: A historiografia política e social que se debruçou sobre a Europa moderna destacou a relação entre o controle da violência e a emergência dos exércitos no processo de construção do Estado, bem como no desenvolvimento do que se chamou de monarquia absoluta. No processo de ascensão da monarquia absoluta, teria ocorrido um enorme aumento da violência pública, do tamanho dos exércitos e da capacidade de destruição das guerras. Todo este movimento estaria intimamente ligado à chamada Revolução Militar Européia. Neste artigo procura-se demonstrar como Portugal esteve inserido neste movimento, destacando as especificidades do seu processo histórico, marcado por resistências, arranjos e negociações.

ABSTRACT: The social and political historiography that bent over about the modern Europe highlighted the relation between the control of the violence and the emergency of the armies in the process of construction of the State, as well in the development that was called of absolute monarchy. In the process of ascent of the absolute monarchy, it would have occurred a huge increase of the public violence, of the size of the armies and of the capacity of destruction of the wars. All this movement would be intimate linked to the called European Military Revolution. In this article we aim to show how Portugal was inserted in this movement, highlighting the specificities of his historical process, marked by resistances, arrangements and negotiations.
