O PERFIL DOS INTÉRPRETES DA COMPANHIA DE
JESUS NO JAPÃO E NO BRASIL NO SÉCULO XVI

RESUMO: O objetivo do trabalho é comparar dados biográficos dos intérpretes da Companhia de Jesus
no Japão e no Brasil no século XVI a fim de conhecer as estratégias usadas pela Ordem para obter
competência em japonês e em tupi. Os catálogos anuais são a principal fonte de informação a respeito das
habilidades lingüísticas dos jesuítas. Duas questões são analisadas por meio dos dados biográficos dos
jesuítas intérpretes: (a) a relação entre posição hierárquica e o conhecimento das línguas vernáculas e (b)
a política de admissão para aqueles que já conheciam aquelas línguas.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this work is to compare the biographical data of Jesuit interpreters in Japan and
Brazil in the XVI Century, in order to learn what were the strategies used by the Jesuits order to acquire
competence in the Japanese and Tupi languages, respectively. The annual catalogues of the Jesuits are the
principal source of information concerning their individual linguistic abilities. Two main questions are
analysed by the biographical data of Jesuit interpreters: a) the relation between hierarchical position
within the order and knowledge of vernacular languages, and b) policies for admission to the order of
candidates who were already familiar with those languages.
