O CONTROLE À PUBLICAÇÃO DE LIVROS NOS
SÉCULOS XVIII E XIX: UMA OUTRA VISÃO DA
CENSURA

RESUMO: O artigo examina a ação da censura lusitana entre meados do século XVIII e início do XIX,
prestando especial atenção à avaliação de romances. A observação do funcionamento interno dos
tribunais censórios revela que eles eram espaço de discussão, controvérsia e disputa, bem como mostra
que a censura aos romances considerava não apenas sua conveniência política, religiosa e moral, mas
também sua qualidade estética.

ABSTRACT: The text examines the performance of Portuguese censorship between the middle of 18th
century and the beginning of 19th century, paying special attention to the evaluation of novels. An
examination of the internal functioning of the Censor Courts revels that they were places of discussion,
controversy and dispute as well as indicates that the evaluation of novels used to consider not only its
political, religious and moral convenience but its aesthetical qualities.
