RESUMO: O objetivo principal deste texto é o de verificar quais as mudanças e reformas que estavam
ocorrendo em Portugal no século XVIII e que poderiam alterar a situação portuguesa no contexto
europeu. Assim como também verificar se existiram tentativas de modernização anteriores e qual foi o
papel de Pombal neste contexto.

ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this text is to check out the changes and reforms which were taking
place in Portugal in the XVIII century which could alter the Portuguese situation in an European context.
We are also going to verify if there were previous attempts to modernization and what the role of marquis
of Pombal in this context was.
