O ENCOBERTO DA VILA DO PRÍNCIPE (1744-1756):
MILENARISMO-MESSIANISMO E ENSAIO DE
REVOLTA CONTRA BRANCOS EM MINAS GERAIS

RESUMO: Este artigo propõe-se a apresentar a trajetória e as idéias de João Lourenço ou Antônio da
Silva, eremita e milenarista que circulou pela Vila do Príncipe (atual Serro), Capitania de Minas Gerais,
nos idos de 1744, dizendo-se o Encoberto e propondo-se a realizar uma sedição de índios, pardos e
negros, cativos e forros. Baseia-se fundamentalmente em fontes inquisitoriais, primeiramente encontradas
pela historiadora portuguesa Ana Margarida Santos Pereira.

ABSTRACT: This article proposes to present the ideas and the paths of João Lourenço or Antônio da
Silva, a millenarian hermit who circulated in Vila do Príncipe (nowadays called Serro), Captaincy of
Minas Gerais, by the year 1744. This man said he was the Encoberto (a kind of Vice-Christ in the Earth,
who the Bible mentions) and tried to make a rebellion of Indians, Mulattoes and Blacks, slaves and freedpeople.
This essay is supported/based by Inquisition sources that Ana Margarida Santos Pereira, a
Portuguese historian, had found it before me.
