RESUMO: A pesquisa pondera as relações entre literatura e experiência urbana, sob esta perspectiva fazse o levantamento das representações da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. O trabalho tem como objeto central a análise das crônicas produzidas por Machado de Assis e Lima Barreto. O estudo destas crônicas considera além do enfoque literário, a configuração histórica e o forte apelo jornalístico deste gênero, que até pouco tempo, era desconsiderado pelo cânone literário. Por meio do desvendamento da floresta de símbolos que é tecida no seio da modernidade, emergem a cidade machadiana e a cidade barretiana.

ABSTRACT: The research ponders the relations between literature and urban experience, under this perspective becomes the survey of the representations of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The work has as central object the analysis of the chronicles produced by Machado de Assis and Lima Barreto. The study of these chronicles, considers beyond the literary approach, the historical configuration and the great journalistic appeal of this genre, that short time ago, was ignored by the literary canon. By means of the discovery of the forest of symbols that is fabric into the heart of modernity, the machadiana and barretiana city emerges.
