SIMBOLIZANDO A DEVOÇÃO: IRMANDADES, CEMITÉRIO E
ENTERRAMENTOS EM PORTO ALEGRE NO SÉCULO XIX

RESUMO: Este artigo pretende analisar as expressões de devoção nas irmandades religiosas de Porto Alegre no que diz respeito às possibilidades no trato com os enterramentos a partir da organização do cemitério geral a cargo da Santa Casa de Misericórdia, em 1850. No decorrer da segunda metade do século XIX verificamos os esforços das irmandades em enterrar seus mortos, entendendo-os como exemplos demonstrativos da importância da sensibilidade religiosa entre os leigos católicos do sul do Brasil. Pretendemos contribuir com uma nova visão historiográfica, ainda pouco explorada, que considera a relevância da religiosidade na capital da Província de São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul.

ABSTRACT: This article aims at analyzing the devotion expressions in the religious brotherhoods/ fraternities of Porto Alegre concerning the possibilities when dealing with the burials since the organization of the general cemetery under the management of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia in 1850. During the second half of the 19th century the efforts of the brotherhoods/ fraternities in burying their dead were analyzed and seen as examples of the importance of the religious sensibility among the catholic laymen in the south of Brazil. We aim at contributing with a new historiographic view, still not very well exploited/ explored, which considers the relevance of the catholic religiousness experienced in the capital of the Província de São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul.
