CIVILIZAÇÃO E BARBÁRIE NO IMAGINÁRIO DA CIDADE:
O CASO DO “ALMANACH ILLUSTRADO DE RIBEIRÃO PRETO” DE 1913

RESUMO: A proposta deste trabalho será a de interpretar o imaginário urbano da Belle Époque Caipira através da presença de imagens e discursos sobre Ribeirão Preto no Almanach Illustrado. Por este prisma, acredito que os almanaques possam revelar uma leitura não apenas idealizada, mas, especialmente, desejada (condições de possibilidade) das transformações urbanas. Mas, se a escrita produzida em almanaques afinava-se com um imaginário urbano elitista e pela presença de uma incipiente sociedade de consumo na cidade, não era menos verossímil que a cidade-desejo evocada nas suas páginas servisse de carapaça à uma trama ambivalente de mando pessoal, de uso da violência e de poder político entre as principais lideranças municipais operadas no lusco-fusco do público/privado e da civilização/barbárie.

ABSTRACT: The proposal of this work will be the one of interpret the urban imaginary of the Belle Époque Caipira through the presence of images and speeches about Ribeirão Preto in Almanach Illustrado of 1913. For this prism, I believe that the almanacs can reveal a not just idealized reading, but, especially, wished of the urban transformations. But, if the writing produced in almanacs it tuned with an urban elitist imaginary and by the presence of a consumption incipient society in the city, was not less likely than the city-wish evoked in her pages served of scutcheon to the an woof of personal authority, of violence use and of caning politician among main municipal leaderships operated in the ambiguous mark of the public and private and of the civilization and barbarism.
