O TEMA DO NEGRO NA VISÃO DE GÉRICAULT

RESUMO: Géricault produziu diversas obras tematizando os negros, como a Balsa da Medusa, o Comércio de Escravos, a Cabeça de uma Jovem Negra, Porte-étendard noir, Episódio da Guerra de Saint–Domingue, Boxeadores, etc. Estas obras coincidem com a época em que a ideologia abolicionista se expandia na França. A discussão a respeito da abolição dos escravos atingiu grande intensidade na Europa e na América e serviu de motivação para a Arte e a Literatura, no período abolicionista.. Pode-se traçar paralelos entre a representação dos negros nas obras de Géricault e nas obras de Samuel Jennings, John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, Marie-Guillemine Benoist, George Morland, etc.

ABSTRACT: Géricault produced various works on the black theme, such as the Raft of the Medusa, the Slave Trade, Head of a Young Negro Woman, Porte-étendard noir, Episode from the War of Saint Domingue, Boxers, etc. These works coincided with the time in which the abolitionist ideology was growing in France. The discussion concerning the abolition of slaves reached great intensity in Europa and America, and served as motivation for art and literature in the abolitionist period. The representation of negroes in Gericault’s works can be compared with the way in which they are represented in the works of Samuel Jennings, John Singleton Cop.
