ROMANCES AMATÓRIOS: LITERATURA E SUICÍDIO NA
BAHIA NOS MEADOS DO SÉCULO XIX

RESUMO: Este texto se propõe a analisar algumas representações acerca do suicídio na literatura baiana dos meados do século XIX e verificar quais as relações entre elas e os ideais românticos. As fontes utilizadas foram folhetins e poesias publicadas por autores baianos que direto e indiretamente tratam do assunto. Segundo concepções vigentes no período, o suicídio era um dos maiores pecados da humanidade. Atentado não apenas contra Deus, mas também contra a família e a sociedade. Relacionar o amor ao suicídio foi uma estratégia usada por alguns escritores baianos para criticar as transformações pelas quais a sociedade vinha passando.

ABSTRACT: This text aims at analyzing some representations upon the literary works in the half of XIX century in Bahia and verifies which are the relationships amongst them and also which are the romantic ideals. The sources used here were newspaper and poems by authors from Bahia who, in a way or in another, deals with this matter. In accordance with the conceptions of that time, the suicide was one of the greatest human sins. It was seen a crime not just against God, but also against family and society. One strategy used by some writers in Bahia was to relate love to suicide in order to criticize the changes that society had gone through.
