RESUMO: Neste artigo o autor tenta compreender os significados da escravidão e da retórica do protesto na cidade de Teresina-Pi nos anos de 1870-1888. Discute também, a constituição da Força Policial na Província do Piauí e sua tentativa em implantar uma política de controle social a fim de reprimir os “grupos subalternos” da cidade: escravos, libertos e homens livres de cor.

ABSTRACT: In this article the author tries to understand the meanings of the slavery and the rhetoric of the protest in the city of Teresina-Pi in the years of 1870-1888. He also argues, the constitution of the Police Force in the Province the Piauí and its attempt in implanting one politics of social control in order to restrain the “subordinate groups” of the city: slaves, and free men of color.
