CULTURA, POLÍTICA E ENGENHARIA SOCIAL:
REVELANDO ALGUMAS PROXIMIDADES DE
GILBERTO FREYRE COM OS GOVERNOS MILITARES

RESUMO: Gilberto Freyre abarcou em suas análises empreendias nas décadas de 1960, 1970 e 1980
diversos aspectos da vida social brasileira. Suas propostas de intervenção do engenheiro social
reafirmavam as suas convicções, conhecidas desde as décadas de 1920 e de 1930, acerca da existência de
um país democrático em sua estrutura. As propostas de abertura política da década de 1980 teriam,
segundo ele, que lidar com as complexidades sociais e psicossociais derivadas dessa condição
democrática cristalizada na esfera social, mas não na esfera econômica. Ou seja, não havia somente
problemas políticos e econômicos a solucionar, naquele momento, mas eram esses os mais desafiantes, já
que os problemas atinentes à esfera social e cultural tinham sua solução facilitada pela vigência, no país,
desde a colonização, de uma forma de democracia social que tinha de ser levada em conta em toda e
qualquer proposta de mudança em andamento.

ABSTRACT: Gilberto Freyre encompassed in his analyses carried out in the 60s, 70s and 80s
several aspects of Brazilian social life. His intervention proposals of the social engineer restated
his convictions, known since the 20s and 30s, on the existence of a democratic country in its
structure. The proposals of political opening from the 80s would have to, according to him, deal
with social and psychosocial complexities derived from this crystallized democratic condition in
the social sphere, but not in the economic one. That is, there were not only political and
economic problems to solve at that time, but they were the most challenging ones, since the
problems concerning the social and cultural spheres had their solution facilitated by the
existence, in the country, since colonization, of a kind of social democracy that had to be
considered in each and every proposal of change in progress.
