O ESCUDO DA VIRTUDE E A IDEOLOGIA DO
PRINCIPADO AUGUSTANO

RESUMO: Este artigo aborda um dos aspectos da nascente ideologia do Principado de Augusto, isto é, as
virtudes do príncipe, tal como exemplificadas no denominado escudo da virtude e que o próprio
imperador citou nas Res Gestae 34.2, tendo em vista a interligação entre estas virtudes com a tradição
republicana, assim como o significado daquelas no contexto imediatamente posterior à Batalha do Ácio.

ABSTRACT: The article treats with one of the Augustan Principate’s rising ideology, that is, the virtues
of the prince, as exemplified on the so-called shield of virtue, which the emperor himself cited in Res
Gestae 34.2, taking into account the interconnection between these virtues with republican tradition, as
well as the meaning of those in the context immediately afterwards the Battle of Actium.
