A ILUMINAÇÃO PÚBLICA DA CIDADE DA PARAHYBA:
SÉCULO XIX E INÍCIO DO SÉCULO XX

RESUMO: Durante o século XIX, as cidades brasileiras são marcadas por transformações em sua estrutura ocasionadas pelas idéias de modernidade que passaram a definir uma nova forma de ordenação do espaço urbano. É a chegada dos tempos modernos que se inicia no século XIX e se consolida no início do XX. A implantação desses novos equipamentos e serviços públicos visava solucionar os múltiplos problemas que afligiam às cidades. Partindo desse entendimento, o presente estudo tem por objetivo averiguar o processo de iluminação pública da Cidade da Parahyba, atual João Pessoa - PB, durante o século XIX e início do XX. E ainda analisar a forma e os meios em que foi implantado esse tipo de serviço, bem como as transformações que ele provocou no cotidiano da população desta cidade.

ABSTRACT: During the nineteenth century, the Brazilian cities are marked by changes in its structure caused by the ideas of modernity that came to define a new way of ordering of urban space. It is the arrival of modern times that begins in the nineteenth century and is consolidated at the beginning of the twentieth century. The deployment of new equipment and services aimed at solving the many problems that afflict the cities. On this understanding, this study aims to examine the process of lighting the City of Parahyba, current João Pessoa - PB, during the nineteenth century and beginning of the century. And also to discuss ways and means by which it was deployed this type of service, and the transformations it has caused in the daily life of people of this city.
