MÚSICA E VESTIMENTA NA PINTURA DE VASOS
GREGOS ANTIGOS

RESUMO: O presente texto pretende tecer uma pequena série de apontamentos sobre a figuração de
músicos em vasos cerâmicos gregos antigos. Nestes comentários, o enfoque será dado às vestimentas, que
praticamente identificam tais músicos, e às relações entre aspectos visuais e musicais dos recitais públicos
e concursos – sobretudo no caso dos agônes musicais em grandes festivais. Para além de ter sido um “sinal distintivo da profissão” e um “complemento obrigatório da apresentação”, veremos que a
vestimenta do músico antigo carregava aspectos simbólicos e que sua representação na cerâmica pode
lançar luz ao estudo das circunstancialidades de recitais e concursos, seja na identificação destas
circunstancialidades, seja ao revelar as características das vestimentas que compõem com os gestos um “espetáculo visual”.

ABSTRACT: The present text intends to weave a small series of notes on the figuration of musicians in
ancient Greek pottery. In these commentaries, the approach will be given to the vestments, that practically
identify such musicians, and to the relations between visual and musical aspects of the public recitals and
competitions – mostly in the case of musical agones in great festivals. Beyond having been a “distinctive
signal of the profession” and a “obligatory complement of the presentation”, we will see that the
vestments of the ancient musician loaded symbolic aspects and that its representation in pottery can turn
light to the study of the context of recitals and competitions, either in the identification of these contexts,
either when show the characteristics of these vestments that compose with the gestures a “visual
spectacle”.
