A JUVENTUDE OPERÁRIA CATÓLICA

RESUMO: A JOC – Juventude Operária Católica – desempenhou um papel importante no cenário
nacional na construção de uma nova utopia, principalmente a partir do golpe de 1964 que procurou
amordaçar as poucas vozes que se levantaram para defender os direitos dos trabalhadores. Representativa,
ainda, de uma nova maneira de organização do laicato na Igreja Católica, não encontrou, por parte da
hierarquia eclesiástica, o apoio suficiente para sobreviver e, mesmo não extinta oficialmente como foi a
Juventude Universitária Católica, acabou desaparecendo devido à perseguição militar e ao descaso de
muitos bispos que não compreenderam a sua importância. Destacamos, em nossa dissertação de mestrado,
esta importância que rendeu os frutos de novos movimentos sociais dentro da Igreja que, agredida em sua
hierarquia, acabou por voltar-se contra um regime que muitos eclesiásticos chegaram a aplaudir.

ABSTRACT: JOC – Catholic Workers Youth – has played an important role in the national scenery in
building a new utopy, mainly since the 1964 political coup which tried to silence the few voices that arose
to defend the rights of the workers. Representative still of a new way of organizing the laycity of the
Catholic Church, it couldn’t get from the ecclesiastic hierarchy, enough support to survive and, even not
officially extinct as the Catholic Universitary Youth, it finished by disappearing and the indifference of
many bishops that couldn’t understand its importance. We high light in our Master Degree dissertation,
this importance which bore fruits to new social actions inside the church, wich, hit in its hierarchy, came
to turn against regime that may priests have even cheered.
