ESTUDO GENEALÓGICO E MESSIANISMO
PORTUGUÊS: O REI PARA BANDARRA

RESUMO: Bandarra foi um sapateiro que viveu na Vila de Trancoso, no século XVI, comunidade cristã nova localizada na região da Beira. Foi detido pela inquisição devido a autoria de trovas de caráter
messiânico que, apesar de proibida, adquire importância junto a tradição profética lusitana, tornando-se
fundamental para os estudiosos do sebastianismo e da restauração portuguesa. Nesta obra são apontados
diversos problemas sociais que, segundo Bandarra, só seriam resolvidos após a vinda de um líder, um rei
que retomasse a ordem e, ao mesmo tempo, mantivesse em curso o processo de expansão ultramarina e de
guerra contra os mouros. É neste sentido que o autor identifica, em suas Trovas, este rei, apresentando
suas características e nos dando pistas genealógicas. Pretendemos, aqui, como fizeram os sebastianistas e
restauracionistas, identificar quem era o rei referido. De certa forma, trilharemos os mesmos caminhos de
seus leitores, ao buscar pistas e formular argumentos para legitimar a interpretação aqui proposta.

ABSTRACT: Bandarra was a shoemaker who lived in Vila de Trancoso, a Christian community located
in the Beira area, in the sixteenth century. He was arrested by the Inquisition due to his ballads of
messianic character which, although they were banned, are important in the context of the Portuguese
prophetical tradition, and are fundamental for the students of the Sebastianism and the Portuguese
Restoration. In this work, several social problems are mentioned which, in Bandarra´s opinion, could only
be solved by the coming of a leader, a king who restored order and, at the same time, kept up the process
of ultramarine expansion and the war against the Moors. It is in this sense that Bandarra identifies this
king in his ballads, pointing out his characteristics and giving genealogical clues. In this work, we intend,
like the Sebastian followers and the restorers did, to identify who that king was. In a way, we will follow
the same path followed by Bandarra´s readers in our search for clues and arguments to legitimize the
interpretation we propose wherein.
