SOBRAL NO LIMIAR DO SÉCULO XX

RESUMO: Este trabalho se propõe a identificar e analisar as funções e as estratégias utilizadas pelas irmandades religiosas de Sobral enquanto formas institucionais da sociabilidade religiosa na consolidação do poder e prestígio das elites na hierarquia social da cidade, no período que vai de 1880 a 1930. É um recorte exemplar de formas de comportamento dominante entre a chamada aristocracia rural do Nordeste no período, onde a religião católica e seu “aparelho” aparecem como elementos fundamentais de socialização, distinção, reprodução e legitimação das elites.

ABSTRACT: This work aims to identify and analyze the functions and strategies used by the religious fraternities as institutional forms of religious sociability in the consolidation of power and prestige of the elites in the city’s social hierarchy between 1880 and the 1930. It is an exemplary portrait of the dominant behavior among the so called rural aristocrats in the Northeast during that period, where the Catholic religion and its ‘machinery’ shows up as the fundamental elements of socialization, distinction, reproduction and legitimization of the elites.
