A “GLORIFICAÇÃO DOS SANTOS FRANCISCANOS” DO CONVENTO DE
SANTO ANTÔNIO DA PARAÍBA: ALGUMAS QUESTÕES SOBRE PINTURA,
ALEGORIA BARROCA E PRODUÇÃO ARTÍSTICA NO PERÍODO COLONIAL

RESUMO: A construção do convento franciscano na Paraíba estendeu-se por quase 200 anos, e seu ápice foi a decoração interna da nave principal, concluída já na segunda metade do século XVIII, ornada com luxuosos azulejos portugueses nas paredes e pinturas trompe l’oeil no forro da nave. Centro nevrálgico da atuação franciscana ao norte de Pernambuco no período colonial, o Convento de Santo Antônio da Paraíba traz alegorias extremamente significativas para a compreensão da imagem que a congregação construía acerca de si e de sua atuação naquele mundo inóspito dos trópicos selvagens. Constituindo-se em discurso visual, a pintura do teto da igreja conventual pode ser entendida como ferramenta de “ordenação do mundo” utilizada na ação junto aos fiéis da sede da Capitania, como um sistema simbólico que cristalizava os poderes e a estrutura colonial em imagens e exemplos edificantes a serem respeitados e seguidos pelos colonos.

ABSTRACT: The construction of the Franciscan convent in Paraíba extended for almost 200 years, and its apex was the decoration of the main church, finished in the second half of the 18th century, adorned with luxurious Portuguese tiles in the walls and trompe l'oeil paintings in the ceiling. Center of the Franciscan performance to the north of Pernambuco in the colonial period, the St. Anthony Convent of Paraíba brings extremely significant allegories that can help to understand the image that the congregation built concerning itself and of his performance in that inhospitable and wild tropics. Being constituted in visual speech, the convent church ceiling’s paintings can be understood as tools of “ordination of the world” used close to the Captaincy inhabitants, as a symbolic system that crystallized the powers and the colonial structure in images and edifying examples that would be respected and followed for the colonists.
