RESUMO: O mandonismo, o arcaísmo, o personalismo e o clientelismo são características definidoras da
feição política brasileira. Desde o seu início, nas três últimas décadas do século XIX, o pensamento social
tem tematizado esses traços constituidores do padrão de domínio vigente no país. Neste artigo, será
demonstrado como o arcaísmo foi debatido por inúmeros intérpretes que objetivavam trazer à tona as
dificuldades de mudança social que já eram plenamente visíveis nas diversas conjunturas estudadas por
Silvio Romero, Manoel Bomfim, Euclydes de Cunha, Fernando de Azevedo, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda,
Oliveira Vianna, Celso Furtado e Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz. Serão trazidos à tona os diálogos, as
convergências, as divergências, as proximidades e os distanciamentos verificáveis no amplo leque de
idéias que florescem ao longo do século XX, com o intuito de esclarecer os efeitos nefastos da contínua
sobrevivência do oligarquismo como uma forma de mando que tem dado substancialidade ao padrão de
domínio sedimentado no país.

ABSTRACT: The bossing, the archaism, the personalism and the clientelism are characteristics that
define the Brazilian political flavor. Since its beginning, in the last three decades of the 19th century, the
social thought has been the constant theme of the constituent traits of the current control pattern in the
country. In this article, it will be demonstrated how archaism was debated by a lot of interpreters who had
the purpose of bringing up the social change difficulties that were totally visible in the several
conjunctures studied by Sílvio Romero, Manoel Bomfim, Euclydes da Cunha, Fernando de Azevedo,
Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, Oliveira Vianna, Celso Furtado and Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz. The
dialogues, convergences, divergences, proximities and distantiations verifiable in the ample range of ideas
that flourish over the 20th century will be brought up, with the purpose of clearing up the disastrous
effects of the continuous survival of the oligarchy as a way of bossing, which has given substantiality to
the control pattern that exists in the country..
