“The Machine Stops” e a economia da atenção

Resumo

Este artigo toma o conto de ficção científica “The Machine Stops”, publicado em 1909 por E. M. Forster, como ponto de partida para discutir a organização do trabalho na chamada “economia da atenção”.  Analisaremos o esquema inicial do conto à luz da epistemologia ocidental, que tende a colocar o Olhar sob suspeita e a reforçar dualismos entre conhecimento sensível e racional, processo que se aprofunda no século XIX, quando se acelera a produção e circulação de imagens mediadas pela reprodutibilidade industrial massiva. Então, trataremos do problema do “público mercadoria”, que permite articular a atuação sobreposta de espectadores da indústria cultural, usuários de redes sociais e produtores de conteúdo na contemporaneidade, papeis já amalgamados no conto de 1909. Finalmente, argumentamos que literatura e filosofia, em associação a movimentos conservadores, construíram a noção de imagens ameaçadoras como uma reação às transformações da indústria cultural massiva ao longo do século XX, mas que nem por isso seus alertas devem ser desconsiderados.
