Kafka, a Century Later

Abstract

A century after his departure, Kafka resonates like a deep echo in the words of Walter Benjamin, who read him through the lenses of despair, inhumane bureaucracy, and social tensions. Kafka, a child of modernity, plunged into the murky waters of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and a divided Prague, where the Jew, the marginalized, the invisible, sought to reclaim his place in the world. Like Dostoevsky's Grand Inquisitor, he understood the unfathomable mysteries of existence, capturing absurdity in his labyrinthine texts. Kafka is the author of endless parables, where the individual is lost in corridors of opaque laws, and figures of authority are unreachable shadows, always out of reach. Kafka’s work, woven by invisible hands, much like the power it denounces, challenges the reader to accept absurdity as the rule and hopelessness as the only certainty. As Benjamin reminds us, Kafka offers no answers; his stories are mirrors of our own confinement, where the gears of bureaucracy and authoritarianism dehumanize, suffocate, and make us ask: where is the key to the labyrinth?
